  • Description

Zambian Foreign Minister Vernon Mwaanga said in Nairobi on Saturday (11 January) that border disputes between neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania were causing serious problems for the transport of his country's imports and exports. Mr. Mwaanga was in the Kenyan capital for talks with Kenya's Foreign Minister Dr. Munyua Waiyaki on the border dispute...and the Rhodesian question.

Since Zambia closed her southern border with Rhodesia, she has had to rely Kenya and Tanzania as outlets and inlets for export and imports. However, dispute has closed Tanzanian roads to kenyan heavy lorries...and this has held up Zambian cargo at Mombasa in Kenya.

Mr Mwaanga said the dispute could not continue ... and he was confident Zambia's "brothers' - Kenya and Tanzania - would be prepared to discuss a solution. He had received a good response to his idea for three-party talks while in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and hoped a similar position could be reached in Nairobi.

If the problem was not solved, he said, Zambia would just have to find alternative routes for her imports and exports.
