  • Description

Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre returned home on Thursday (1 September) after visiting the Soviet Union and Egypt.

SYNOPSIS: President Barre arrived in Egypt on Wednesday (31 August) and held talks with President Anwar Sadat on events in East Africa and Ethiopia. The official Middle East News Agency said, without giving details, that the two statesmen's views were identical. Somali supports the Western Somalia Liberation Front, which claims control of most of Ethiopia's Ogaden desert after five weeks of fighting Ethiopian forces. The Kremlin has urged both sides to negotiate. A Soviet commentary last week said Somali support of guerilla claims to the Ogaden defied the Organisation of African Unity Charter.

Egyptian Vice-President Hosni Mubarek and Somali officials were also present when the two leaders met. President Barre was reported to have gone to Moscow to discus deteriorating Soviet-Somali relations, following the outbreak of fierce fighting in the Horn of Africa. On his return of Mogadishu, Somalia, the President gave no indication that the talks had repaired the two countries' damaged relations.
