  • Description

Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko spent two hours talking with French President Pompidou at the Elysee Palace on Friday (15 February) and it was agreed that the French leader would make his delayed visit to the Soviet Union soon.

The background to the Soviet French talks is the renewed suspicion in France that Moscow and Washington are seeking to assert dual control over the world scene - ignoring Europe.

At the time of the October Middle East war, the Pompidou Government accused the United States and the Soviet Union of trying to impose a "superpower hegemony".

Diplomatic sources attribute the delay in President Pompidou's visit to Moscow to the political strains resulting from the French charges and also French attitudes on European security and detente.

After the meting, Mr. ???romyko described the talks as "extremely useful" but he said he would prefer not to name a date for a summit conference between President Pompidou and Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev.

The talks at the Elysee lasted two hours longer than scheduled and covered the international political situation as well as Franco-Soviet relations.
