  • Description

Austria's national football team beat F.C. Roma 2-1 in a friendly international matching Rome on Wednesday (8 December).

SYNOPSIS: A crowd of 20,000 turned to watch the two sides play. The first half featured little action, as the Austrians tried to adjust themselves to playing before a wildly partisan crowd. The second half was a different story.

The Austrian side began to assert itself. Playing patient, attacking football the action centred around the Roma goal area.

Then Austrian strider Krankl was fouled inside the penalty area, and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to the visitors.

Krankl picked himself up and slotted the penalty home.

Roma launched a series of counter attacks, urged on by the crowd. However, their raids proved unsuccessful and the Austrians began rebuilding their offensives.

Then wing forward Gessner latched onto a perfect through ball and hammered it into the back of the net.

The Italians tried everything to pull back their two goal disadvantage. But their only goal came with another penalty. Bartolomei scored from the spot.

The penalty came just before fulltime and the final score remained 2-1 in favour of the Austrians.
