Background: President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire arrived in Ethiopia on October 7th on a three day visit at the invitation of Emperor Haile Selassie.
During their talks, the Zaire president was expected to brief the Emperor on his recent visit to Uganda to ask President Amin to extend the deadline for the expulsion of Asians.
They were also expected to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral relations, and African as well as international issues
SYNOPSIS: The international airport at Addio Ababa, and the start of an official visit by president Mobutu Sesa Seko of Zaire.
The invitation for the three day visit was made by the Emperor of Ethiopia, Hails Selassie, who was on hand at the airport to greet his guest. So were other members of the royal family.
President Mobutu had a busy programme ahead of him...including visits to the headquarters of the Organisation of African Unity and some agricultural projects.
He was also scheduled to have a round of talks with the Emperor. During these discussions, President Mobutu was expected to brief the Emperor on his recent visit to Uganda to persuade President Idi Amin to extend the deadline for the expulsion of Asians.
The two leaders were also expected to discuss ways of strengthening relations between Zaire and Ethiopia, as well as African and international issues.
At a state banquet to welcome President Mobutu, Emperor Haile Selassie said that the just cause of African peoples suffering under colonial and racist regimes in southern African wold triumph. He said that African states, faced with intransigence in the region, would have to meet the problem with greater solidarity and determination.
