    THE NEW ZEALAND MINISTER OF DEFENCE, MR DEAN J. EYRE, SAID IN KUALA LUMPUR, ON MAY 1, THAT HIS GOVERNMENT WOULD "DEAL PROMPTLY" WITH ANY REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE BY MALAYA IN THE EVENT OF AGGRESSION.

    MR EYRE SAID HIS GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED MALAYSIA AND AFTER ITS FORMATION, HE COULD NOT SEE ANY REASON TO EXPECT ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN HIS COUNTRY'S POSITION WITH REGARD TO MALAYA.

    THE DEFENCE MINISTER, WHO IS ON HIS WAY FROM THE SEATO CONFERENCE IN PARIS, HAS HELD DISCUSSIONS OF "GENERAL INTEREST" WITH THE MALAYAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN.

    SINCE 1955, NEW ZEALAND HAD MAINTAINED AIR, NAVAL AND GROUND UNITS AS APART OF THE COMMONWEALTH STRATEGIC RESERVE TO MAINTAIN PEACE AND STABILITY IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA.
