At Helsinki International airport to greet the President, were Finnish President Urho Kekkonen and members of the cabinet. president Senghor was accompanied by his wife and Foreign Minister Mr. Assane Beck.
From the airport President and Madame Senghor were driven to the Presidential Palace, where they will stay for the duration of their visit.
After lunch with Dr. Kekkonen the Senegalese President laid a wreath at the grave of the Unknown soldier at the main cemetery in Helsinki.
President Senghor has visited Finland once before -- in 1970 -- on unofficial visit. Later he is due to tour an industrial plant and cultural institutions. He will then tour various parts of the country. including Finnish Lapland in the Arctic Circle.
SYNOPSIS: At Helsinki International Airport on Thursday, President Leopold Senghor of Senegal arrived at the start of a five-day state visit to Finland. The President was accompanied by his wife and Foreign Minister Assane Beck. They were greeted by the Finnish President Urho Kekkone.
Members of the Finnish Cabinet were also present. president Senghor has visited Finland once before, in 1970, on an unofficial tour. During his current stay he will be visiting various industrial and cultural institutions. At the weekend he will spend a day aboard a Finnish Ice-Breaker. He will then tour the South West of Finland and then fly on to Finnish Lapland to see the Arctic Circle.
President Kekkonen visited Senegal in January 1969 for a two-week holiday. He spent much of his time fishing for sword-fish.
From the airport, President and Madame Senghor drove to the Presidential Palace in helsinki where they are to stay during their visit. After lunch with Dr. Kekkonen the Senegalese President visited the main cemetery in Helsinki, where he laid a wreath on the grave o the Unknown Soldier. On Thursday evening President Senghor attended a gala banquet given in his honour by the Finnish President.
