  • Description

An international film team has begun shooting a film in Rome depicting the life of Mafia leaders over the post 30 years -- after Changing the location from New York following reports of underworld threats to the crew.

The film, "The Valachi Papers" is based on the book by Peter Maas -- an edited version of the confession made by Joe Valachi in 1964, while serving a life sentence in prison.

Valachi, a self-confessed leader of the Mafia, died of natural causes in prison after writing a detailed study of the organisation.

The reported threats to the crew came at a time when the New York underworld is ensnared in gang warfare. Several Mafia members -- and leaders -- have been gunned down in the past year, most notably Joseph ("Crazy Joe") Gallo, one of New York's most feared Mafiosi. Gallo was shot down during his 43rd birthday party at a restaurant in the "Little Italy" ares of New York. He died on the way to hospital.

There had been a contract on Gallo's life ever since Mafia boss Joe colombo was shot at an Italian day rally in New York in June 1971. And although police do not believe Gallo was responsible, he had been counted among the living dead --pot least for arousing the anger of the biggest boss of them all, Carlo Gambina, by trying to muscle in on his narcotics traffic in Harlem.

Like Valachi, who had a 100,000 dollar price on his head, Gallo announced his intention to write his memoirs -- even though he was critical of the best-selling book "The godfather", a detailed but fictional look at the organisation.

"The Valachi Papers" is the third major film on the Mafia to be made recently and follows "The Godfather" and "The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight" -- a story based partly on gallo's life.

All the original names of the Mafia members are used in the "Valachi Papers" and its makers say the film is essentially a documentary of the growth of the Mafia.

The shooting shown in this Visnews film depicts several Mafiosi meeting under the chairmanship of Salvators Maranzano (played by Joseph Wiseman), a former head of the Mafia. The meeting took place in 1931 under the guise of a religious society reunion in the Bronx area of New York.

The chief character, Joe Valachi, is played by Charles Bronson.

SYNOPSIS: In Rome -- a film about the Mafia. It's called "The Valachi Papers" and based on the confessions of Joe Valachi, a self-confessed Mafia leader. Valachi....played by Charles Bronson...wrote a detailed study of the underworld organisation when he wax serving a life prison sentence in the United States. The film depicts the growth of the Mafia over the past thirty years. And already, gangland bosses have apparently made their dislike about it known. The location of the film had to be changed to Rome after the film crew said they'd received threats from the New York underworld. But things were still tense on set.....

These sequences, directed by Terence Young, are about a Mafia meeting in nineteen-thirty-one. The gang bosses -- including the organisation's chairman Salvatore Maranzano -- posed as members of a religions society celebrating a reunion in the Bronx area of New York. All the characters in the film retain the original names of the Mafia members. The "Valachi Papers" is the third controversial film about the Mafia in the last year. It follows "The Godfather" and "The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight"....a film about "Crazy Joe" Gallo, a Mafia leader who was gunned down in New York earlier this year.

In the eyes of the underworld, Gallo became too ambitious. And, like valachi, he said he'd write his memoirs. But gangland bosses prefer to stay OUT of the limelight....and Gallo never got the chance.
