  • Description

AT A CEREMONY AT THE BRITISH NAVAL BASE DOCKYARD IN SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (8 DECEMBER), THE DOCKYARD WAS FORMALLY HANDED OVER TO THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT.

MR. G.W. REYNOLDS, THE BRITISH MINISTER OF DEFENCE FOR ADMINISTRATION, FLEW FROM BRITAIN TO OFFICIATE AT THE CEREMONY. HE HANDED THE DOCKYARD OVER TO THE ACTING PRIME MINISTER, DR. GOH KENG SWEE, WHO IN TURN HANDED THE LEASE OVER TO MR. HON SUI SENG, CHAIRMAN OF THE WHOLLY GOVERNMENT-OWNED SEMBAWANG SHIPYARD WHICH WILL NOW OPERATE THE YARD.

DURING THE CEREMONIES, A PLAQUE WAS UNVEILED.

THE OFFICIAL HANDING OVER THE DOCKYARD WAS A FORMALITY AS SINGAPORE TOOK OVER THE YARD ON DECEMBER 1.

THE NAVAL DOCKYARD, WHICH EMPLOYS 3,300 MEN, COVERS 250 ACRES OF THE 2,500-ACRE NAVAL BASE, AND ITS FACILITIES INCLUDE A GRAVING DOCK OF 95,000 DEAD WEIGHT TON CAPACITY, FIVE FLOATING DOCKS AND ABOUT 35 WORKSHOPS.

AS WELL AS GIVING SINGAPORE THE SHIP-REPAIRING YARD, BRITAIN IS ALSO PROVIDING GBP1,250,000 STERLING TO CONVERT THE YARD FROM NAVAL TO COMMERCIAL USE.

THE SEMBAWANG SHIPYARD, MANAGED BY THE BRITISH SWAN HUNTER GROUP, WILL CONTINUE TO RE-FIT AND REPAIR THE SHIPS OF BRITAIN'S FAR EAST FLEET, AND COMMERCIAL WORK IS NOT EXPECTED TO PLAY A BIG PART IN THE SHIPYARD'S ROLE UNTIL AFTER THE TOTAL BRITISH WITHDRAWAL IN THREE YEARS TIME.
