  • Description

Soccer ... and Holland showed they are finely tuned on the eve of the World Cup. They played with great verve and flair in trouncing European Cup finalists F.C. Bruges in the Paris International tournament on Thursday (18 May). The match was called-off ten minutes before the end because drenching rain had ruined the pitch.

SYNOPSIS: Bruges, in the all-white a strip, had some reputation to salvage after Liverpool beat them so soundly in the European Cup final. In the early stages, they showed their unease at facing such a formidable side.

Rain was already coming down heavily, but it was not worrying the Dutch team unduly. After five minutes, they earned a free kick, and Haan scored their first from well out.

Haan again, and scoring his second with a neat lob.

The Dutch were enjoying their damp night out. Their steady attacking was a third goal -- this time from Lubse.

The second half and the match was becoming a rout. From a corner, a goalkeeping mistake let Cross in for their fourth.

While this was no longer a contest, Bruges turned on some attractive play. They regained a little pride when Van der Eycken flicked through the goalkeeper's legs for their only goal. This was a brief respite, for Lubse bobbed up again for Holland.

The dutch were now honing their teamwork for more demanding tasks ahead. A delicate chip from Cross brought goal number six.

Players were tiring in the heavy going, but Holland had not yet finished their work. Clever positioning from Cross gave him a hat-trick, and his team their seventh goal. Then the referee decided the pitch had become too wet, and the match was over.
