  • Description

GURKHA TROOPS WERE FLOWN TO BRUNEI FROM SINGAPORE LAST SUNDAY TO COMBAT THE ANTI-GOVERNMENT UPRISING. BY THE EVENING, FOUR COMPANIES OF GURKHAS TRAINED IN JUNGLE WARFARE, WERE TAKING UP POSITIONS IN THE TROUBLE AREA. THESE TROOPS WERE SOON TO RECAPTURE THE BRITISH-OWNED SERIA OIL-FIELDS FROM THE REBELS.

THE GURKHAS WERE ACCOMPANIED ABOARD THE HASTINGS AND BRITANNIA AIRCRAFT AT SINGAPORE'S CHANGI MILITARY AIRPORT BY UNITS OF THE RAF REGIMENT AND A FIELD HEADQUARTERS.

SHEIKH AZAHARI, THE LEADER OF THE SECRET JUNGLE ARMY, IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT HIS MOVEMENT INTENDS TO SEIZE CONTROL OF SARAWAK AND BRITISH NORTH BORNEO, AS WELL AS THE PROSPEROUS STATE OF BRUNEI. THE SHEIKH ALSO SAID THAT THE OIL-INSTALLATIONS AT SERIA WOULD BE DESTROYED BY THE REBELS IF BRITISH TROOPS MADE ANY ATTEMPTS TO DRIVE THEM FROM THE OIL-CENTRE.

TODAY, THERE ARE REPORTS THAT BRITISH TROOPS ARE ADVANCING ON SERIA, WHERE THE REBELS ARE HOLDING FOUR HUNDRED EUROPEANS PRISONER. WARSHIPS BROUGHT MORE TROOPS DURING THE NIGHT, WHILE A DESTROYER AND TWO MINESWEEPERS PASSED THROUGH LABUAN, ON THEIR WAY TO BRUNEI.
