• Short Summary

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS, MR. ARTHUR BOTTOMLEY, RETURNED TO LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY)?

  • Description

MR. BOTTOMLEY BEING INTERVIEWED (SOF) AT LONDON AIRPORT.

TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "SECRETARY OF STATE, WHILE YOU'VE BEEN AWAY THERE'S BEEN CONTINUING SPECULATION ON THE POSSIBILITY OF BRITISH MILITARY INTERVENTION IN RHODESIA IF THERE SHOULD BE A UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. CAN YOU TELL US WHETHER OR NOT BRITAIN IS CONSIDERING SUCH ACTION?"

ANSWER: "NO. I MADE THE POSITION QUITE CLEAR TO THE LEADERS AND THE PEOPLE OF THE FOUR COUNTRIES THAT I VISITED IN WEST AFRICA THAT BRITAIN WOULD NOT USE FORCE, THAT IF FORCE WAS USED THE POLITICAL REPERCUSSIONS COULD SPREAD FAR AND WIDE -- WHO KNOWS? -- I DON'T SAY IT WOULD BE A (INDISTINCT) SITUATION I THINK THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES WOULD BE DISASTROUS TO EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA, AND I TOLD ALL MY COLLEAGUES IN GOVERNMENT AND ELSEWHERE THAT MY RESPONSIBILITY WAS TRYING TO BRING ABOUT A PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT IN RHODESIA. AND THAT I WAS GOING TO DO. FORCE, AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED, WAS RULED OUT."

INTERVIEWER: "AND WHAT SORT OF RECEPTION HAS THIS HAD?"

ANSWER: "WELL, AS FAR AS MOST OF THE LEADERS WAS CONCERNED, THEY RECOGNISED THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT I CARRIED. THEY AT TIMES EXPRESSED A VIEW THAT URGED THAT I TAKE STRONGER ACTION THAN I'M DOING AT THE MOMENT, BUT AT LEAST I SATISFIED THEM THAT ALL THAT I WAS DOING MY BEST TO TRY AND BRING ABOUT A SETTLEMENT THAT WAS VERY DIFFICULT, AND I BELIEVE THEY RECOGNISED THAT WE BOTH HAD A COMMON OBJECTIVE AND THAT WAS TO BRING ABOUT IN RHODESIA A SITUATION WHERE DEMOCRACY....WOULD FLOURISH."
