    Men of the Greek armed forces were joined by the Military rulers of Greece last Sunday in an Easter Tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church -- the egg-cracking ceremony. Prime Minister George Papadopoulos and the Regent, General George Zoetakis, were given red-coloured eggs by each of the soldiers, and then broke them with similar eggs. Later, there was a display of folk-dancing by the troops.

    SYNOPSIS: The barracks of the Attica area units of the Greek armed forces...the Regent of Greece, General George Zoetakis arrived here last Sunday to join the men in an Easter tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church - the egg-cracking ceremony. He arrived to chants of "long-live the revolution".

    By tradition, the state rulers visit the troops on Easter Sunday. The tradition calls for each soldier or Royal Guard Evzone to meet the ruler with a red-painted egg in their hands...and these are then cracked by the ruler with a similar egg that he already has. This went on it several parts of Athens as the Regent, the Prime Minister, Mr George Papadopoulos, and members of the cabinet visited units in the capital.

    Later, General Zoetakis and the troops ate the traditional Easter meal - "arni", lamb roasted on a spit. And they drank "retsina", a local wine specially brewed for the occasion.

    After the meal, a display of folk dancing by the Royal Evzones, in their colourful costumes.
