  • Description

THE 21,000 TON NORWEGIAN TANKER, FERNCOAST, WAS TOWED INTO THE SARONIC GULF YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WITH FIRE STILL RAGING IN HER AFTER SECTION. THE FIRE BROKE OUT AFTER AN EXPLOSION IN THE STERN SECTION WHILE THE SHIP WAS CRUISING OFF THE COAST OF CRETE LAST MONDAY.

HER CREW, SOME OF WHOM WERE INJURED, ABANDONED THE SHIP. TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED, WERE PICKED-UP BY THE ISRAELI LINER SHALOM, AND THE REMAINDER BY A U.S. FLEET TRANSPORT, THE MOUNTRAIL.

AFTERWARDS, THOSE TAKEN ABOARD THE MOUNTRAIL WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE GREEK RESCUE TUG, ATLAS, WHICH LATER TOOK THE TANKER IN TOW.

ON REACHING THE BAY OF SAINT THEODOSIUS, ON THE SARONIC GULF, ABOUT 60 MILES (97 KMS) SOUTH OF ATHENS, MEN FROM THE ATLAS AND THE FERNCOAST'S CREW BOARDED THE TANKER TO FIGHT THE BLAZE. IT WAS CONFINED TO THE ENGINE ROOM AREA AND IN A SHORT WHILE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL.

THE TANKER WILL REMAIN IN THE AREA UNTIL THERE IS NO FURTHER DANGER FROM FIRE. THEN SHE WILL BE TOWED NORTH TO PIRAEUS FOR REPAIRS. THE FERNCOAST IS SERVING WITH THE U.S. SIXTH FLEET AMPHIBIOUS FORCE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN.
