  • Description

A UNITED NATIONS TEAM OF EXPERTS IS ON A FACT-FINDING TOUR OF GAMBIA AND NEIGHBORING SENEGAL TO STUDY PROBLEMS OF CLOSER LINKS BETWEEN THE TWO WEST AFRICAN TERRITORIES.

THE PROBLEMS ARE MANY: WIDELY-DIFFERENT CULTURES AND LEGAL SYSTEMS - PLUS LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES: ENGLISH IN GAMBIA, AND FRENCH IN SENEGAL.

ANOTHER PROBLEM IS TRADE - GAMBIA, BRITAIN'S OLDEST AND LAST REMAINING COLONY IN WEST AFRICA, IS LINKED ECONOMICALLY WITH THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH, WHILE SENEGAL'S TIED WITH FRANCE AND, THROUGH HER, ASSOCIATED WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET.

THE U.N. TEAM IS FILMED LEAVING BATHURST, CAPITAL OF GAMBIA, BY RIVER AND OVERLAND TRUCK ON A TWO-MONTH TOUR OF THE INTERIOR. THEIR REPORT, DUE EARLY NEXT YEAR WILL BE STUDIED BY THE GOVERNMENTS OF BOTH TERRITORIES AS AN INITIAL STEP TOWARD TALKS BETWEEN SENEGAL AND GAMBIA ON CLOSER ASSOCIATION.
