  • Description

About 100,000 Mexican couples were married Friday (1 December) in mass civil weddings held in cinemas, sports stadiums and municipal plazas all over the country.

Brass bands played and gaily-dressed dancers performed at the weddings where many of the brides carried children in their arms and some were even grandmothers.

Senora Maria Ester Zuno Echeverria, wife of the Mexican President was joined by the wife of visiting Chilean President Salvador Allende in officiating at the largest of the mass wedding ceremonies in Mexico City.

Senora Echeverria was the sponsor of the campaign called "The Mexican Family" aimed at legalising the union of thousands of Mexican couples and consequently the status of millions of illegitimate children.

The reported reasons for the large number of couples not having bothered to get married before were described as poverty, illiteracy and laziness. Documentation fees were waived for Friday's mass wedding ceremonies.
