RELATIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CAMBODIA REACHED A NEW CRISIS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHEN PRINCE SIHANOUK, THE CHIEF OF STATE, CALLED A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO DECIDE WHETHER AMERICANS IN CAMBODIA SHOULD BE EXPELLED. LATER IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE DECISION HAD BEEN POSTPONED INDEFINITELY.

EARLIER IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT NO AMERICAN JOURNALISTS WOULD BE GRANTED VISAS TO VISIT CAMBODIA AS LONG AS "THEIR ATTITUDE TO CAMBODIA HAD NOT RADICALLY CHANGED," FOLLOWING AMERICAN REPORTING OF THE COUNTRY'S INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS LAST WEEK. TWO JOURNALIST, FRNACOIS SULLY OF "NEWSWEEK" AND JACK LANGGUTH OF THE "NEW YORK TIMES" WERE ORDERED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY, RADIO PHNOM PENH ANNOUNCED. THEY LATER FLEW TO BANGKOK.

MEANWHILE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN THE CAPITAL HAS BEEN A FAVOURITE TARGET FOR SLOGAN PAINTERS WHO HAVE DEMANDED THAT AMERICANS LEAVE CAMBODIA. EARLIER THIS YEAR THE EMBASSY WAS BADLY DAMAGED IN ATTACKS BY EXTREMIST GROUP.

THE PRESENT CRISIS IN RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES HAS BEEN CAUSED BY A SERIES OF INCIDENTS ON THE BORDER WITH SOUTH VIETNAM, INVOLVING BOTH VIETNAMESE AND AMERICAN AIRCRAFT...

ON OCTOBER 24, AN AMERICAN C-123 AIRCRAFT WAS SHOT DOWN OVER CAMBODIA AND EIGHT AMERICANS LOST THEIR LIVES. THE WRECKAGE HAS BEEN TRANSPORTED TO PHNOM PENH, AND PUT ON PUBLIC DISPLAY.
