May 1 ... May Day. The traditional "day off" for the working man, a day when he could forget about the factory or the mine and spend a peaceful day with his wife and children. In recent years, however, become the day for showing off new weapons and military power ... a day for big political rallies ... when leaders appear before their people on draped balconies in main squares.
This year, official film from the Hungarian capital of Budapest shows May Day in the old style. The political leaders, of course, were there on the stand - but in place of the soldiers and the tanks were crowds with may-poles and balloons. The only topical note was struck by a model of Yuri Gagarin's space vehicle, and crudely-written banners praising his achievement.
Workers, in spontaneous happy mood, by - and so did laughing children, girl athletes and sporting youths. They performed gymnastics exercises in the Heroes Square. And in four hours, half a million people passed through the square. In the City Park, however, the scene was leisurely...
Families went boating, people sat and played cards on the grass. It was a day for music, picnics, games, and pleasure trips on the Danube. Children added more splashes of colour by wearing fancy costumes.
