    The Ivory Coast leader, President Felix Houphouet-Boigny opened the first stock exchange in French-speaking Africa at a ceremony in Abidjan on Friday (2 April).

    The President cut a symbolic ribbon in front of the entrance to a series of offices in the new 21-story SCIAM Building on Abidjan's Plateau to inaugurate the new exchange. The Abidjan Bourse des Valeurs, which will be supervised by its own Council, will hold quoting sessions every Wednesday morning beginning on Wednesday (7 April).

    Ivory Coast's Minister of the Economy and Finance, Mr Henri Konan Bedie, said the government hoped "to make this nation of peasants a nation of shareholders". The exchange was designed to mobilize savings in order to speed up economic development.

    The government hopes that the creation of this national market will mobilize savings and speed up economic development.
