  • Description

THE LINER "CAPETOWN CASTLE", AGROUND FOR TEN HOURS TODAY (TUESDAY) IN THE SCHELDT ESTUARY, WAS REFLOATED BY TUGS AT THE SECOND ATTEMPT.

THE 27,002 TON LINER, CARRYING 250 PASSENGERS AND 300 CREW, LEFT SOUTHAMPTON ON MONDAY AND WAS PUTTING INTO FLUSHING TO PICK UP MORE PASSENGERS.

THE "CAPETOWN CASTLE", ON A SUPPLEMENTARY SERVICE TO SOUTH AFRICA, RAN AGROUND ON A SANDBANK AS SHE WAS APPROACHING THE PORT. TUGS ATTEMPTED TO RELOAT HER DURING THE MORNING, BUT THEIR EFFORTS WERE FRUITLESS AS THE LINER'S BOWS DROVE EVEN DEEPER INTO THE SAND.

ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO DANGER IN THE CALM CONDITIONS, THE UNION CASTLE LINER WAS STRADDLING THE OUTER HARBOUR OF THE PORT OF FLUSHING, AND THE AUTHORITIES WERE WORRIED ABOUT POSSIBLE INTERFERENCE WITH OTHER SHIPPING IN THE BUSY SCHELDT ESTUARY.

AT THE SECOND ATTEMPT, HOWEVER, ON THE EARLY EVENING HIGH TIDE, THE TUGS BROUGHT HER OFF THE SANDBANK AND THE "CAPETOWN CASTLE" ANCHORED TO CHECK DAMAGE BEFORE PUTTING INTO FLUSHING, WHERE SHE WAS DUE TO TAKE ON ANOTHER 75 PASSENGERS FOR MADEIRA AND SOUTH AFRICA.

A CABLE WHICH BECAME ENTANGLED WITH THE SHIP'S PROPELLER DURING EFFORTS TO REFLOAT HER WAS REMOVED BY FROGMEN, AND SHE WAS EXPECTED TO SAIL TONIGHT.

MANY OF THE PASSENGER ABOARD WERE TOURISTS SETTING OUT TO VISIT RELATIVES IN SOUTH AFRICA.
