  • Description

Students occupied the former Cambodian Embassy in Saigon on Friday night (24 April) in protest against the reported massacres of hundreds of Vietnamese civilians in Cambodia.

The building had been empty since Phnom Penh broke off diplomatic relations with Saigon in 1963 and about 150 students stormed through police barricades to occupy the building.

They were still in possession of the Embassy the next day (Saturday) but police held back more students who tried to join their colleagues.

Buddhists in Saigon have held prayers services for Vietnamese civilians killed in Cambodia. A large group of crippled ex-servicemen gathered for a vigil in the capital on Saturday (25 April) to call for a volunteer force to protest civilians. A South Vietnamese Government delegation was due to leave for Cambodia on Sunday (26 April) to investigate the situation of the Vietnamese there.
