  • Description

Mozambique became Africa's 43rd independent state at midnight on Tuesday (24/25 June) after nearly 500 years of Portuguese rule and ten years of bitter guerrilla warfare against the resident Portuguese army.

Portuguese naval craft and a troop carrier liner took the last remaining Portuguese troops from this 303,000-square-mile East African country earlier in the day.

Samora Machel--the country's new President--formally announced that the capital Lourenco Marques would be renamed Can Phumo after a chief who lived in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Frelimo--the nationalist movement which had wrested independence from the Portuguese--the 42-year-old leader pledged a revolutionary and socialist government whose motto would be "To each according to his work, from each according to his abilities".

The Portuguese flag was lowered in the capital's main sports stadium before 80,000 people 15 minutes after midnight. Mozambique's ??? flag was raised to tumultuous applause from the assembled crowd.
