  • Description

With the security of the many communist heads of state now in New York for the 15th General Assembly of the United Nations as a major responsibility, the New York City Police have assembled a complicated network of communications to report with speed and accurate detail on the location at any one time of any visiting dignitary.

The heart of this network is located at the Centre Street Police Headquarters. Telephone calls come in constantly from any of the State Department men travelling with, say, Mr. Khruschev - "Mr. Khruschev is now leaving the Soviet headquarters." If the destination is unknown, as it frequently is, police sergeants along the various streets will call in - "Mr. Khruschev now on Second Avenue." An immediate call alerts all police along Second Avenue.

A recent newspaper report said that police even had the bushes numbered in Central Park when Marshall Tito took a stroll, and regular calls announced "Bush 12", etc.

Press, radio and TV constantly telephone this operations headquarters. We all wish the delegations would do the same.
