  • Description

ONE OF THE MOST HECTIC JOB AT LONDON ZOO IS LOOKING AFTER THE ELEPHANTS...AND IT CAN BE THE WETTEST AS WELL, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SCRUBBING TOTO.

TOTO'S A BABY, IN ELEPHANT TERMS. SHE'S ONLY SEVEN YEARS OLD, AND SEVEN FEET HIGH. BUT SHE'S GROWING FAST, SAYS HEAD KEEPER BILL CROMPTON.

TOTO CAME TO THE ZOO FROM EAST AFRICA IN 1962, AND LIVES IN THE GBP200,000 ELEPHANT HOUSE, THE MOST UP-TO-DATE IN THE WORLD. EVERY MORNING MR CROMPTON AND HIS ASSISTANT, TONY HENNESSY, BRING HER INDOORS FOR A BATH IN HEATED WATER.

VISITORS ARE ALLOWED TO WATCH AS TOTO IS SCRUBBED DOWN BY HER KEEPERS, APPARENTLY ENJOYING IT ALL. SHE HAS AN ENORMOUS FLANNEL, IN FACT A BLANKET, AND WHEN SHE'S IN A PLAYFUL MOOD SHE HAS A HABIT OF THROWING IT AT HER UNFORTUNATE KEEPERS.
