  • Description

The United States yacht Intrepid moved to within one win of successfully defending the America's Cup yesterday (Tuesday), when she defeated the Australian challenger Gretel II lead 3-0 in the best-of-seven yachting series.

Despite some close-quarter manoeuvring as the yachts moved up to the start, there was no repetition of the pre-race collision which led to the disqualification of Gretel II on sunday. Intrepid's skipper Bill Ficker put his boat in the lead at the start.

Forty-six seconds behind at the first mar, Gretel II matched Intrepid on the reaches, but failed to reproduce the downwind speed which won her a temporary advantage on Sunday -- before the controversial disqualification.

In winds of more than 20 knots, the American yacht raced home by a winning margin of one minute and 18 seconds. Australia must now take the last four consecutive races to be the first challenger to capture the American Cup, held by the New York Yacht Club since 1851.
