  • Description

Members of South Africa's Liberal Party - white and non-white - demonstrated outside Johannesburg's City Hall Mar 29 in protest against the Government's ban on the African National Congress.

Standing shoulder to shoulder, white and coloured demonstrators carried banners or protest, and distributed anti-ban leaflets to passers by.

Condemning Premier Verwoerd's action, Liberal Party leaflets said that "No amount of police intimidation, deportation of leaders or even the banning of the African National Congress will make people accept passes - to them, the mark of slavery." The passes referred to are identity cards which coloured people are required by law to carry.
