  • Description

More than a thousand students from Beirut schools marched through the city yesterday (Thursday) to protest against the Government and the Lebanese schools curricula.

The demonstration was the third in as many days. On the two previous occasions police had to use tear gas to disperse the students.

The demonstration appeared to have two main complaints. As they marched they shouted anti-Government slogans, mainly centred around the educational system, and called on security forces to fight in areas where the Israelis had made a recent attack.

A large number of the students gathered outside the offices of the Prime Minister, Mr Saeb Salem, who addressed the demonstrators from his balcony. He said their requests would be looked into and that his offices and those of the Education Ministry would always be open to the students.
