Background: Soccer -- and the East German team, Carl Zeiss Jena, has gone forward to the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup after beating Standard Liege on their home ground on Wednesday (7 December). The result caused one of the biggest surprises of the third round of the competition.
SYNOPSIS: The Stadium was packed to capacity as Standard Liege, in darker strip sought to recover from their 2-0 defeat by the East Germans in the first leg. Standard attacked from the start but failed to penetrate the Jena defence. In spite of their superiority, the East Germans did not have it all their own way and Standard had a chance in the opening minutes with a long kick outside the penalty area, but the shot went wide.
Soon after, the Belgians had another opportunity with a free kick outside the penalty area.
There were times when Jena also failed to make the most of the chances. An attack from mid-field produced only a long shot that did not trouble the Standard goalkeeper.
By the middle of the first half, the visitors were putting pressure on the Belgian team. With the advantage of home support, Standard had been tipped to avenge their earlier defeat. But in spit of vigorous mid-field play, the Jena attack continued. Only a mistake in the goal mouth saved Standard.
But within minutes the East Germans repeated the move and their No 10 made no mistake with a fine left foot kick into goal, to put Jena ahead 1-0 at half time.
In the second half, Jena again dominated play. and could have added to their score...
Standard fought back hard and scored a short-lived equalizer. Then the final goal came from a penalty awarded to Jena.
