  • Description

On Thursday (9 November) the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for Turkey to withdraw its troops from Cyprus and urging a resumption of peace talks. The General Assembly recommended that the Security Council take steps to back up the resolutions. Among the delegates to speak on the matter was the Greek Undersecretary of State, Mr. Andreas Zaimis.

SYNOPSIS: The Turkish Ambassador Mr. Orhan Eralp also spoke.

Then the voting began. Not only Turkey objected to parts of the resolution but also Britain and the United States. Both countries objected to the section of the resolution referring to Security Council action to back up the Assembly decision - however the resolution passed despite many abstentions on the vote concerning Security Council action.
