Background: A group of Ashanti chiefs recently went on board the British Royal Navy warship "HMS Ashanti" as guests of the Captain, Commander G.A. Bower. The ship is on a courtesy call at Tema Harbour, Ghana.
The delegation, headed by the Mamponghene Nana Atakora Amaniampong, consisted of representatives of the Asokorehene, Bekwaihene, Bantamahene, Kyidomhene and the Apaghahene tribes.
Later the chiefs were taken on a four-hour cruise. Other guests included Kwei Lamptey, the Minister of Defence, the paramount chief of Prampram and Nene Annorkwei, President of the Eastern Region House of Chiefs. The crew of the Ashanti put on a demonstration of the ship's war readiness including manoeuvres by the ship's anti-submarine helicopter.
Before the ship returned the leader of the African delegation presented gifts to the captain and crew of the Ashanti. The ship's next stop will be in the South Africa.
