Background: At the invitation of the Minister of Interior for Municipal and Rural Affairs, Mayors from the East Bank of Jordan have been meeting in Amman for a second conference on the development of their areas and on relations with the Ministry. The conference was opened on Saturday (16 October) by Crown Prince Hassan.... deputising for King Hussein... and attended by 120 delegates representing 48 towns. Prime Minister Wasfi Tell was also present.
SYNOPSIS: The Lawyers Association Hall in Amman, where a second conference of East Bank Mayors was opened on Saturday by Crown Prince Hassan, who was deputising for King Hussein.
The conference was called to discuss general development hopes along the East Bank, and also relations between the East Bank administrators and the Ministry of Interior for Municipal and Rural Affairs.
There was applause for a sympathetic speech from Crown Prince Hassan, who then listened with other delegates to Prime Minister Wasfi Tell talking of need to consolidate administration.
More than 120 delegates were representing 48 East Bank towns and villages. Its in these districts that the Palestine Liberation Organisation is most active, and close liason between the East Bank and Central administrators in Amman is considered of great importance.
