    THE 53RD PARIS MOTOR SHOW WHICH OPENED TODAY (THURSDAY) IS DESCRIBED AS THE BIGGEST DISPLAY OF CARS AND RELATED EQUIPMENTS EVER ASSEMBLED IN ONE EXHIBITION. SOME 1,350 FIRMS - 440 FROM OUTSIDE FRANCE - ARE SHOWING CARS, TRUCKS, MOTORCYCLES, TRAILERS, ACCESSORIES AND SERVICE STATION EQUIPMENT UNTIL THE 16TH OF THIS MONTH.

    THE PARIS MOTOR SHOW REMAINS THE TOP INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF ITS KIND AND BATTLEGROUND FOR THE WORLD'S MAJOR MOTOR CAR MANUFACTURERS. THIS YEAR'S SHOW IS PARTICULARLY FULL OF NEW STYLES, ENGINES, PAINTWORK, DOOR LATCHES AND PEDALS. IT ALSO HAS A FEW NEW MODELS.

    THE BIGGEST SENSATION AT THE SHOW IS REPORTED TO BE A NEW ITALIAN FERRARI. THE ITALIAN STYLISTS, PININFARINA HAVE BUILT A FERRARI 365P SPECIAL BERLINETTA THREE-SEATER WITH THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE CENTRE OF THE DASHBOARD. THE CENTRAL SEAT REVOLVES ON BALL-BEARINGS TO ALLOW THE DRIVER TO GET IN AND OUT EASILY.

    BRITAIN HAS 31 MODELS ON DISPLAY - THE LARGEST NUMBER AT THE SHOW. THEY INCLUDE THE ROLLS ROYCE SILVER SHADOW AND THE NEW STANDARD-TRIUMPH GT6. A 107 M.P.H. GRAND TURISMO COUPE, THE GT6 WILL NOT BE SOLD IN BRITAIN UNTIL THE SPRING OF 1967. FROM SWEDEN COMES THE VOLVO 144, A FOUR-DOOR SALOON WITH A TOP SPEED OF 110 MILES AN HOUR, AND THE BIGGEST CAR YET MADE BY THE COMPANY.

    HOLLAND'S DISPLAY INCLUDES THE DAF-44, A TWO-DOOR SEDAN WITH A TWO-CYLINDER 850 CC ENGINE DEVELOPING 45 HORSE POWER. WEST GERMANY HAS ENTERED THE BMW-2000, WITH A TOP SPEED OF 105 MILES AND HOUR. THE FOUR-DOOR SEDAN HAS A FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE DEVELOPING 102 HORSE POWER. WEST GERMANY, WITH 17 MODELS ON DISPLAY, SHARES SECOND PLACE WITH THE UNITED STATES AS THE SECOND BIGGEST EXHIBITOR.

    JAPAN IS JOINING THE BATTLE FOR THE RICH EUROPEAN SALOON CAR MARKET THIS YEAR WITH MEDIUM-PRICED SMALL FAMILY SALOONS. THE PARIS SHOW IS EXPECTED TO BE THE SPRINGBOARD FOR AN OFFENSIVE BY JAPANESE FIRMS AND EUROPEAN MANUFACTURERS ARE ANXIOUSLY WAITING TO SEE WHAT IMPACT THEY'LL HAVE WITH SUCH MODELS AS THE HONDA-800.

    FRANCE HAS NO NEW CARS ON DISPLAY, BUT IS SHOWING 16 MODELS. THEY INCLUDE THE PEUGEOT-204, A FOUR-DOOR SEDAN WITH FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE AND A FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE DEVELOPING 58 HORSE POWER. THE FRENCH MOTOR INDUSTRY IS BOOMING AT THE MOMENT AND THREATENS TO OVERTAKE BRITAIN AS EUROPE'S SECOND LARGEST EXPORTER OF CARS AFTER WEST GERMANY.
