    ZYMUNT HANUSIK OF POLAND YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WON THE FIRST STAGE OF THE BERLIN-PRAGUE-WARSAW "PEACE RACE" FOR CYCLISTS. SECOND WAS JOSEPH SCHOETERS OF BELGIUM AND THIRD OLE HOJLUND OF DENMARK.

    YESTERDAY'S 170 KILOMETRES (106 MILES) STAGE OF THE RACE WAS FROM EAST BERLIN TO FRANKFURT-ON-ORDER AND BACK TO EAST BERLIN. HANUSIK'S TIME WAS THREE HOURS 48 MINUTES AND 40 SECOND. SCHOETERS WAS ONLY SECONDS BEHIND ON THREE MINUTES 49 MINUTES AND TEN SECOND. ANOTHER 15 SECONDS BEHIND WAS HOJLUND
    IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT GABRIEL MOICEANU, CAPTAIN OF THE RUMANIAN TEAM, HAD BEEN BANNED FROM THE RACE AFTER TWO TESTS HAD PROVED THAT HE HAD TAKEN STIMULANT DRUGS. MOICEANU WAS ONE OF THE TWO RIDERS SELECTED AT RANDOM FOR A "DOPING" TEST.

    MOICEANU HAS TAKEN PART IN NINE PREVIOUS SO-CALLED "PEACE" CYCLE RACES. HIS REMOVAL FROM THE RACE WAS REPORTED BY THE EAST GERMAN NEW AGENCY, ADN.

    YESTERDAY'S SECTION OF THE RACE WAS STARTED FROM THE KARL MARX ALLEF OF EAST BERLIN BY THE POLISH AMBASSADOR OF EAST BERLIN. A TOTAL OF 107 RIDER FROM 18 COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR'S RACE FROM EAST BERLIN THROUGH PRAGUE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, TO WARSAW, POLAND.

    THE RACE, OVER A TOTAL OF 2,308 KILOMETRES (1,440 MILES) WILL END ON THE 24TH OF THIS MONTH.
