  • Description

PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE OF GUINEA CONTINUED HIS TOUR OF THE COUNTRY FOLLOWING TALKS WITH PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF LIBERIA, IN THE REMOTE EASTERN TOWN OF N'ZEREKORE. HE VISITED 17 FEDERATIONS AND 11 SECTIONS OF THE PARTI DEMOCRATIQUE DE GUINEE, TO BRING THE PARTY MESSAGE TO THE OUTLYING DISTRICTS.

THE PRESIDENT WAS GIVEN A ROUSING RECEPTION BY THE LOCAL POPULACE IN EACH REGION HE VISITED AND, IN SEREDOU, A SPECIAL DISPLAY BY MUSICIANS, DANCERS AND MARCHERS, WAS ARRANGED.

IN MACENTA, THE PRESIDENT VISITED A TEA FACTORY AND INSPECTED THE OPERATION. HE MET MANY OF THE WORKERS AND CHATTED WITH THEM DURING HIS VISIT.

GUINEAN OFFICIALS LATER SAID THE PRESIDENT'S TOUR SHOWED AN EXCELLENT SITUATION EXISTING IN THESE REGIONS.

PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE RECENTLY MADE AN AGREEMENT WITH PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF NEIGHBOURING LIBERIA, TO ALLOW PRODUCE FROM THE REMOTE EASTERN REGIONS OF GUINEA TO BE TRANSPORTED ACROSS LIBERIA FOR SHIPPING.

PREVIOUSLY, GOODS HAD TO BE TRANSPORTED ON ALONG DETOUR TO GUINEA'S ATLANTIC PORT OF CONAKRY.

DURING THE TALKS IN N'ZEREKORE, THE TWO PRESIDENTS AGREED TO ALLOW FREE MOVEMENT OF THEIR NATIONALS ACROSS THEIR FRONTIER. PRESIDENT TUBMAN CONGRATULATED PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE ON HIS DECISION TO RESUME DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN AND FRANCE AND TO MAINTAIN GOOD RELATIONS WITH ALL AFRICAN STATES. PRESIDENT TUBMAN SAID: "WE MUST DEVELOP AND CREATE AN AFRICAN CULTURE AND AN AFRICAN ECONOMY."
SYNOPSIS: THE TRADITIONAL WELCOMING CEREMONY INVOLVING THE PRESENTATION OF COLA NUTS TO THE PRESIDENT.

THE PRESIDENT THEN DROVE, IN AN OPEN CAR, THROUGH STREETS LINED WITH CHEERING PEOPLE. MOST OF THE POPULATION TURNED OUT FOR THE WELCOME AND SPECIAL DISPLAY WAS ARRANGED IN THE PRESIDENT'S HONOUR.

AN ORCHESTRA, EQUIPPED WITH PURELY AFRICAN INSTRUMENTS BEGAN THE ENTERTAINMENT, WHICH INCLUDED DANCING AND MARCHING DEMONSTRATIONS BY YOUNG PEOPLE CARRYING WELCOMING PLACARDS. DURING A SPEECH, LATER IN THE TOUR, PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE SAID THAT THE PEOPLE HAD TO BECOME HARD-WORKING PARTY MILITANTS. THOSE WHO ONLY PAY LIP SERVICE TO THE REVOLUTION ARE ENEMIES OF THE PARTY. HE ALSO DENOUNCED THE OLD PAGAN PRACTICES.

A PICTURE OF THE PRESIDENT WITH PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF LIBERIA WAS CARRIED BY STUDENTS. DURING THEIR MEETING THE TWO PRESIDENTS HAD AGREED TO ALLOW THEIR NATIONALS FREE MOVEMENT OVER THEIR FRONTIERS.

AFTER THE WELCOMING CEREMONIES, THE PRESIDENT VISITED A NEARBY TEA FACTORY AND MET OTHER VISITORS WHO WERE INSPECTING THE OPERATION. HE ALSO MET AND TALKED TO SOME OF THE FACTORY WORKERS DURING HIS VISIT. A RECENT AGREEMENT WITH PRESIDENT TUBMAN NOW ALLOWS PRODUCE FROM THIS REMOTE EASTERN REGION TO BE TRANSPORTED ACROSS LIBERIA TO THE SEA, INSTEAD OF THE LONG DETOUR TO GUINEA'S OWN ATLANTIC PORT OF CONAKRY.

A VISIT TO A MACENTA SCHOOL COMPLETED THE PRESIDENT'S ENGAGEMENTS IN THIS AREA. AGAIN, HE WAS WARMLY RECEIVED AND LOCAL WOMEN PRESENTED GIFTS, TO MARK THE OCCASION.

IN A LIGHT-HEARTED MOOD, THE PRESIDENT TALKED HAPPILY WITH THE STUDENTS WHO RESPONDED BY CARRYING THEIR PRESIDENT SHOULDER-HIGH.
