Background: Stade d'Abidjan and Kalum Star of Conakry drew one-all in the first leg quarter final of the African Football Club Champions' Cup. Stade are Club Champions of the Ivory Coast; Kalum Star are champions of Guinea. They met at the Houphouet-Biogny Stadium in Abidjan. It is the first time that Guinea has sent a tournament team to the Ivory Coast since the quarrel between the two countries five years ago.
On the face of it, success for Kalum Star. They came from Conakry hoping to be able to hold the Ivory Coast Champions to a draw on their own ground for the first leg. The second leg will be played on October 4 in Conakry where Kalum Star will have the home ground advantage.
At Sunday's match the referee came from Cameroun. The Cameroun flag, and the flags of other nations competing for the Club Champions' Cup flew above the stadium. Forty thousand spectators thronged the stands of the stadium, including a large contingent from Guinea.
Stade opened the scoring when Maurice Dehi blasted the ball past Kanara in the 21st minute. Fourteen minutes later Diallo Kandia equalised for Kalum Star with a shot that left Denial no time for doubt.
There were other chances in front of the goals but they were not taken. Towards the end of the first half Kalum Star were given a free kick just outside Stade's penalty area. But Ali Bado's shot was cleared. Stade and Kalum Star left the fields with one goal each.
