  • Description

TORRENTIAL AUTUMN RAINS HAVE CAUSE CATASTROPHIC FLOODS IN THE RICH AGRICULTURAL REGION OF EL ASNAM, ABOUT 130 MILES (ABOUT 210 KILOMETRES) WEST OF ALGIERS. SO FAR NINE PERSONS HAVE DIED IN THE FLOODS, MANY MORE HAVE BEEN INJURED, AND AN ESTIMATED NINE THOUSAND ARE HOMELESS.

THE FLOODS HAVE DESTROYED SEVERAL MILES OF THE ORAN-ALGIERS RAILWAY, AND RENDERED MANY ROADS IMPASSABLE. THEY ARE THE WORST FLOODS TO HIT EL ASNAM SINCE 1932, AND THE MOST SERIOUS DISASTER SINCE THE 1954 EARTHQUAKE, WHICH CLAIMED 1,000 LIVES.

MANY OF THE DESTITUTE LIVED IN VILLAGE HOUSES BUILT WITH MUD BRICKS, WHICH WERE WASHED AWAY COMPLETELY. FOOD AND BLANKETS HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO THE REFUGEES, AND DOCTORS OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION HAVE BEEN FLYING BY HELICOPTER TO REMOTE VILLAGES WITH MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO TREAT THE SICK.
