  • Description

Millions of Soviet television viewers have been told that Richard Nixon had to resign the U.S. Presidency because of political manoeuvering by the Democrats and an emotive campaign against him by the media.

In the first detailed Soviet comment on Mr. Nixon's departure, the official Tass news agency director general. General Leonid Zamyatin, said the Watergate affair was simply used as a "weapon in the inter-party struggle".

The news of the resignation was carried by Moscow radio and newspapers on Friday (August 9).

Later in the day, Moscow television reporters asked Muscovites for their opinion on the affair.

Those interviewed said they believed the policy of peaceful co-existence would not change and that relations between the United States and the Soviet Union would continue to improve.
