  • Description

VISNEWS filmed Apl 17 the opening of the World Conference on Religion and Freedom held in the Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, U.S.A.

The religions represented at this conference are Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Questions such as: "What is Man? "Are there common ethical concerns in the great world religions?"; "How is freedom defined in your faith?" were discussed by four panels each consisting of a Buddhist, a Hindu, a Jew, a Muslim and one or more Christians.

Among the great many international delegates and observers were Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands; General Alfred Gruenther, President of the American National Red Cross; the Burmese ambassador to the U.S.A. Mr. U Win and former Burmese Premier Mu. U Nu, large groups of Burmese and exiled Tibetan monks, and the Prime Minister of Lao monks.

The congress is in reach for understanding and communication across religious lines without attempting to fuse the world religions. Each participant retains his religious distinction but is prepared to listen as the other man explains his religious faith.

One of the two speakers at the opening was Mr. U Nu, the first Prime Minister of the Union of Burma, a spiritual as well as a political leader of his people popularly known as "the man with the rosary".

The Dallas World Conference was preceded by two other international conferences; the International Convention on Peace and Christian Civilization, Florence 1952, and the Second National Conference on Civilization and Religion organized by the Foundation for Religious Action in the Social and Civil Order, in Washington, D.C. 1955.
