Background: Starting from Spa on Wednesday evening, the more than 100 competitors will find themselves on the roads of Europe. This is the 27th Liege-Rome-Liege rally, and once again, the best pilots among the competitors will fight for the victory, others trying to conquer a place of honour while the rest will simply try to end, at all costs, this contest which has become traditionally - and very rightly - the Marathon of the Road.
In this crowd of participants, the Belgian Willy Mairesse (winner of last year) seems to be again the greatest favourite. The biggest danger for the Belgian pilot and his team-mate will come from the German team Stranle - Linge, who are considered the first outsiders.
Other favourites are, the French pair Storez - Buchet, (who were 2nd last year) and other teams like Changy - Lickens, Laroche - Radix, Harris - Hacquin, etc... and all these teams will try to rally Liege on Sunday with a minimum of penalisations.
We cannot give you all the cities and places the rally comes through, but, the 4.918 Km. long itinary goes through places like Treves - Kaiserslautern - Varazdin - Zagreb - Fiume - Trieste - Schilpario - Bergamo - Grenoble - Annecy - Vittel - Reims and so back to Spa. About 5.000 Km. : But that is not all - the cars will also have to climb not less than 49 cols (mountains) among which the hardest are : the Stelvio - the Gavia and the Vivione.
