  • Description

Liberia's President William Tolbert took delivery on Tuesday (12 March) of his nation's first Presidential jet - a twelve passenger Grumman Two.

It was presented to the President at a large ceremony at Springs Payne Airport, near Monrovia, by the Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr. Richard Henries.

The Grumman Two, with a top speed close to that of major international jets, has a maximum range of three thousand five hundred miles (5,250 kms) and, to compensate for sparse ground navigation equipment in Africa, carries its own highly sophisticated navigational aids.

SYNOPSIS: President William Tolbert of Liberia followed the Heads of State of Gabon, Uganda and Zaire, and on Tuesday took possession of a new Grumman Two jet - a modern small-capacity jet to serve as his Presidential airliner.

With a top speed close to that of a modern international jet the Grumman Two will enable President Tolbert, and any other Liberian officials on inter-state business, to by-pass slow overland routes and fly quickly to other African capitals.

To overcome the lack of ground navigation systems in Africa the Grumman Two has its own in-built guidance systems, including radar.

The new aircraft was presented to Mr. Tolbert by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Richard Henries, at a large ceremony at the Springs Payne Airport near Monrovia. The aircraft was named "Speedy" in recognition of Mr. Tolbert's desire for swift national development.
