  • Description

Argentine President Jorge Videla ended a four-day tour of the Patagonia region of Argentina on Saturday (17 July) with a visit to Ushuaia - the southernmost city in the world.

SYNOPSIS: The President arrived after visiting several key cities during his first tour since the armed forces seized power in Argentina in March. HiS trip to Patagonia was aimed at spurring development in the sparsely populated area - and the President said that within three months he would propose legislation aimed at promoting development of Patagonia's agricultural, cattle and oil resources. President Videla was greeted by the Governor of the Tierra del Fuego, Captain L.J. Arigotti.

The President told regional representatives that his government wanted to assist less populated areas of Argentina and that businessmen setting up new enterprises in the region would be offered tax concessions and other incentives. General Videla also said that the authorities were studying measures to boost production of coal, mutton and fish in Patagonia.

Despite its high latitude the region does not experience climatic extremes, and large areas of grassland provide pasture for sheep - Patagonia's principle economic asset.

But other industries are being developed - as President Videla saw when he visited this crab-meat processing and canning plant in Ushuaia.

As far as mineral deposits are concerned coal is found in the region, but it is not top quality. However, petroleum has been discovered and developed in the Tierra del Fuego and near the Strait of Magellan and natural gas is also present.
