  • Description

A POWERFUL NEW TREMOR STRUCK EARTHQUAKE-SHATTERED WESTERN SICILY TODAY (THURSDAY), KILLING FIVE PEOPLE AND INJURING AT LEAST 69. THE TREMOR, ONLY SLIGHTLY LIGHTER THAN LAST WEEKS DISASTROUS EARTHQUAKE, SENT THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF THE AREA FLEEING INTO THE OPEN.

BUSINESS HOUSES, SCHOOLS AND HOMES WERE DESERTED WITHIN SECONDS OF THE TREMOR, AS PANIC-STRICKEN SICILIANS FLED, IN RAIN, HAIL AND SNOW INTO THE OPEN COUNTRY, FEARING A REPETITION OF LAST WEEK'S DEVASTATION.

THE TREMOR REGISTERED GRADE EIGHT ON THE 12-POINT MERCALLI SCALE, COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS GRADE NINE. HOWEVER, THE DAMAGE WAS SLIGHT. A POLICE OFFICIAL EXPLAINED THAT MOST OF THE DAMAGE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE, HAD BEEN DONE LAST WEEK. TWO CATHEDRALS, TWO MAIN BRIDGES AND MANY HOUSES, WHICH HAD REMAINED STANDING AFTER THE PREVIOUS EARTHQUAKE, COLLAPSED UNDER THE FRESH ONSLAUGHT.

THE DEAD AND INJURED WERE MOSTLY FIREMEN, POLICE AND VOLUNTEERS, DIGGING FOR CORPSES AMONG THE RUINS OF THE DEVASTATED TOWNS. THEY WERE HIT BY CRASHING WALLS AND MASONRY AS THEY PROBED THE RUBBLE.

CHAOS FILLED THE STREETS OF TOWNS AND VILLAGES AS MOTORISTS FLED FOR THE COUNTRY, IGNORING TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND FREQUENTLY CRASHING INTO EACH OTHER.

MANY THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES, WHO HAD RECENTLY BEEN PERSUADED TO LEAVE THEIR TENTS AND MOVE INTO EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION, FLED IN TERROR FROM THE BUILDINGS AS THE NEW QUAKE STRUCK. IN ONE HOSPITAL, SEVERAL REFUGEES INJURED LAST WEEK REFUSED TO STAY INDOORS ANY LONGER AND FINALLY WERE TAKEN OUT INTO THE COUNTRY IN AMBULANCES.
