INTRODUCTION: Australia's long hot summer broke with a vengeance in the northern state of New South Wales on Monday (16 May), when torrential rain caused severe flooding, isolating the towns of Wee Waa and Gunneda.

SYNOPSIS: Swollen rivers poured over the rich agricultural land and many people were forced to evacuate their homes as floodwaters rose. Livestock losses have been counted in thousands and insurance assessors have estimated the overall damage in the area in multi-millions of Australian dollars. Only houses built on high ground escaped the flooding. Highways between Sydney and the northern areas were cut off and sewerage systems in towns have failed.

Around Wee Waa cotton farmers have seen yet another promising crop destroyed -- their last successful season was in 1972. Since then their land has been subjected to yearly flooding and many of the farmers are reported to be thinking of giving up and moving elsewhere. There were also fears for the safety of campers and holidaymakers in low-lying areas and emergency teams scanned the region by helicopter, warning people of the danger.
