Background: General Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes, is a fairly popular choice as Guatemala's new President - considering the fervour and diversity of the electorate during the elections of Jan 19. None of the four candidates for the Presidency gained an absolute majority (50 per cent plus one vote) so Fuentes was elected only after an eliminating count of votes against his nearest rival Mario Mendez Montenegro of the leftist Partido Revolucionario.

Fuentes' political course is extremely wight wing and none of the unsuccessful candidates, who will now seek concessions from the Presidency in return for congressional support, is communist.

The election was necessitated by the assassination last July of President Castillo Armas who led the army of liberation which ousted the communists three years ago. It speaks volumes of the hazards faced by a South American political leader that Armas was killed by a communist member of the palace guard.
