  • Description

An angry crowd of Turks surrounded a house in an Istanbul suburb today where two armed terrorists are holding hostage the 14-year-old daughter of an army major. The crowd shouted at the men that they would be lynched if the girl was harmed.

Army officers also promised the men that they would be handed over to the angry crowd if they did not release the girl unharmed.

The men, believed to be members of the so-called Turkish Liberation Army, originally held the army officer's family as hostages, but later allowed his wife and ten-year-old son to go free, holding only the girl.

The two men are also suspected of being involved with last week's kidnapping and murder of the Israeli Consul-General in Istanbul, Mr. Ephraim Elrom.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of armed troops and police on Monday (May 31) continued their siege of the house in an Istanbul suburb where two armed terrorists were holding hostage the daughter of an army officer.

The two men, who are also believed to have been involved in the murder of Israeli Consul-General Ephraim Elrom, have offered to free the girl in exchange for passports and safe conduct out of Turkey.

Turkish army officers, using loudhailers, warned the men they would be banded over to an angry mob outside the house, if they did not release their 14-year-old hostage unharmed.

The army officers also refused to bargain saying they would capture the two men either dead or alive. So far the two gunmen have defiantly rejected all calls for them to surrender, claiming they would be able to escape when the time came.

Newspapers splashed the drama across their front pages and carried pictures of the scene of the siege. Also many of the soldiers who have been on duty around the house for the last 24 hours have refused to withdraw until the terrorists are captured. Behind them waited the crowd, their mood becoming more angry by the hour.
