  • Description

ABOUT 1,000 BRITONS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF VALLETTA TODAY (TUESDAY) IN A SILENT PROTEST AGAINST BRITAIN'S PROPOSED PLANS TO CUT BY TWO-THIRDS THE BRITISH FORCE IN MALTA. THE DEFENCE CUTS WOULD MEAN THAT EXPENDITURE ON THE ISLAND WOULD BE CUT FROM GBP12 MILLION TO BETWEEN GBP5 MILLION AND GBP6 MILLION WITH A CONSEQUENTIAL EFFECT ON THE ECONOMY. WHILE THE PROTEST MARCH CONTINUED TO THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION, THE MALTESE GOVERNMENT WAS CONSIDERING NEW PROPOSALS FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.

THE MARCHERS WERE CHEERED BY THE MALTESE PEOPLE AND SOME THREW FLOWERS OVER THEM. THEY WALKED BEHIND A HUGE PLACARD BEARING THE SLOGAN: "BRITISH RESIDENTS FOUR-SQUARE WITH THE MALTESE," AND A WOMAN WITH A KING CHARLES SPANIEL DOG LED THE WAY. SOME OF THE WOMEN WORE FLOWERY HATS AND THERE WERE BEARDED FORMER NAVAL OFFICERS, NOW RESIDENTS OF MALTA, IN THE PROCESSION.

AT THE HIGH COMMISSION THE BRITONS HANDED IN A PETITION WHICH READ: "WE ARE MARCHING TO PROTEST AT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSED DEFENCE CUTS IN MALTA. WE FEEL THAT THESE CUTS WILL BE OF LITTLE OR NO FINANCIAL BENEFIT TO BRITAIN AND THAT THEY WILL CAUSE GRIEVOUS HARDSHIP TO OUR LOYAL FRIENDS. WE DEPRECATE THE ACTION OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT."
