Background: United States President Richard Nixon's special Peace envoy, General Haig, arrived in Saigon on Tuesday (16 January) to brief South Vietnam's leader Nguyen Van Thieu on the latest developments in the Paris peace talks.

General Haig was met by the United States Ambassador to South Vietnam, Mr. Ellsworth Eunker, and American military officials.

General Haig has also been ordered to brief the Governments of the Khmer Republic and Laos on the now developments in the Paris talks.

General Haig was to spend one and a half hours in discussion with President Thieu soon after arriving in Saigon. On Wednesday (17 January) he was to meet with Mr. Bunker to report on the outcome of the meeting. No details were released to newsmen.

The American peace envoy's arrival in Saigon has added to the speculation that a ceasefire in Indochina is close at hand. But throughout Saigon there has been little indication of urgent preparations should an agreement between North Vietnam, the United States and South Vietnam be reached.
