Background: The Libyan Jamahiriyah leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Damascus on Saturday (23 June) on the first leg of a tour of Arab countries. One of the main topics for discussion was ways of strengthening Arab opposition to the Egyptian Israeli peace treaty.

SYNOPSIS: Damascus airport -- the first stop on Colonel Gaddafi's four. There to meet him, Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad.

Official greetings marked the start of three days of hard talking and official engagements. Informed sources said the two leaders were expected to discuss moves to convene a summit of expected to discuss moves to convene a summit of hard line Arab leaders and also to discuss demands for tough sanctions against the United States.

A major impetus for Colonel Gaddafi's visits to other Arab countries appeared to be his concern about the possibility of an Egyptian attack on his country. He is seeking to improve his relations with other Arab States in the hope that their support will deter any possible Egyptian invasion plans. Other topics the two men discussed at the Presidential Palace in Damascus were developments in the Arab world and Israeli attacks in south Lebanon.

On the question of the proposed union between Syria and Iraq, Colonel Gaddafi was quoted as saying that this was one of the Arab nation's dearest causes.

While the two leaders were holding their discussions, the Libyan Jamahiriyah and Syrian Foreign Ministers and other government officials held separate discussions, also on the subject of stronger Arab action against the Egyptian-Israeli peace moves.

One of the aims of these meetings was to try and encourage Iraqi support for the five-member 'Front for Steadfastness and Confrontation'. This alliance groups Syria and the Libyan Jamahiriyah along with Algeria, South Yemen and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Colonel Gaddafi believes President Assad could encourage Iraq -- a long-time maverick in the arab world -- to bolster the alliance with both economic and military aid. But the visit was not all hard talking. On Saturday (23 June) evening the two leaders attended a State Banquet.
