  • Description

The first university in Thrace was opened at Komotini on Thursday (20 March) by Greek President Michael Stassinopoulos.

Komotini, in the northeastern corner of the country near the Turkish border, has a large Moslem population, and the inauguration of the university was of considerable significance in the area.

When President Stassinopoulos -- a 71-year-old law professor -- arrived at Alexandroupolis, south of Komotini, he was greeted by government officials, including Education Minister, Mr. Panayotis Zeppos.

Also present were various army officers. Thrace is considered a militarily sensitive area because of its proximity to Turkey.

Large crowds turned out to see the President's motorcade proceed to the university, the sixth to be build in Greece. Students in local traditional costume welcomed the party.

Before the opening ceremony, three Greek Orthodox Bishops blessed the building which was provided to help de-centralize Greece's educational system.

Previously, students from the area had to travel to Athens' two over-crowded universities or to the nearest university at Salonika which is over 150 miles (250 kilometres) away.
