  • Description

Israeli soldiers disguised as airport mechanics, stormed a hijacked Belgian airliner at Lydda Airport on Tuesday, killing three of four Arab commandos who were holding the hundred passengers and crew hostage. It happened after a day of tense negotiation as Red Cross officials bargained for the release of the hijack victims.

The Sabena Boeing 707 was hijacked on Monday evening (8 May) by the commandos shortly after leaving Vienna, on the second stage of its flight from Brussels to Israel.

One of the dead hijackers was a women. The survivor was captured by the Israeli Defence Unit, which made the carefully planned assault. Three passengers and two soldiers were also wounded.

Earlier, the Israeli Cabinet refused to submit to the hijackers' demands that one hundred captured commandos be freed from Israeli jail in return for the passengers and crew.

Negotiations were conducted by Red Cross officials throughout the day as the plans remained parked on a side runway at Lydda International Airport. Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan assumed command of the takeover operation as soon as the aircraft landed.
